How to Prep Your Home for a Professional Paint Job

Painting your home is a great way to alter its appearance and quality, and although doing it professionally is a plus, it’s important to get it right. This can only be achieved through thorough preparation. Prepping your home before the painters roll up will save time and reduce all that mess, but it also assists you in ultimately achieving the result you desire.

Here’s how to do it right:

Void Area

  • Remove all furniture, wall hangings, and room décor. In smaller rooms, move centrally located items out to the middle of the room and protect them with available drop cloths or plastic sheeting.
  • Protect floors: Spread drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect them from paint splatters and spills. Secure the edges by applying painter’s tape; this will not make someone stumble.
  • Remove the curtains and blinds, allowing interior house painters to access the window frames without splattering paint.

Clean the Walls

  • Mold and Mildew Check: Clean all mold or mildew on the surface with a broom, scrub or wash it with water or bleach mixture of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. Clean the item’s surface with water and ensure that the surface is thoroughly dry before painting.

Consider all Repairs

  • Fill Hoses and Cracks: Check for holes, cracks, and any imperfections on the walls. Use a spackling compound or wall filler to fill up small holes and cracks; sometimes, you may need a patching kit.

  • Sand the Surface: After the putty is dry, sand the areas you have patched to be smooth and in line with the wall. Sanding will also remove rough spots or peeled paint.
  • Prime the Walls: If your walls have had much patching or are having the color radically changed, prime the walls. It is better to do this now than after four layers of paint have been applied. Primer seals and allows for equal adhesion of the topcoat.

Keep Fixtures and Trim Safe

  • Cover Light Fixtures and Outlets: Replace removable lights, switches, and outlets with black or dark-colored ones, or place non-transparent covers over them. One should use painter’s tape to cover areas that should not be painted, like windows, the bottommost parts, or any door frame.
  • Remove Hardware: Remove hardware such as screws, hinges, and handles, including door knobs, hooks, curtain rods, etc. Place them into a labeled container to avoid confusion when reassembling the items later.
  • Mask Off Trim and Molding: The painter’s tape should be applied over the trim, molding, and other organic shapes on the walls. Submerge the tape to the surface gently so the paint does not find its way underneath it.

It goes without saying that the more you prepare yourself and space for a respective event or activity, the better the outcomes will be, and the same applies here as well. However, before hiring any painting company, adequate time should be given to preparing the house by cleaning the walls, fixing the damages, covering fixtures and trims, and being in touch with painters for the best painting experience; all these aspects, if well done with most things in proper place will make you eagerly await to get a beautiful new look that suits your style and boosts the aesthetics of the house you live in.
